Free For All Friday No. 3: brand-new planners

I love this time of year when the 2014 planners are flooding the market and the maximum variety of planners are available. It's especially fun to see what's new this year. Have you found any planners that are brand-new this year?

And as always on Fridays, feel free to discuss anything planner-related!

  1. I don't actually like this time of year because I start stressing about what planner set-up to use for the new year. You only have a small window of time to purchase them so you have to get it right. Too.....much.....pressure!!!!!

I haven't actually seen too much available at the office supply stores. My daughter and I have been to several in the last week and at one of them we couldn't even get any 2014 inserts. We were shocked. They said they would be available in October. And I drove to the Franklin Covey store to look at the new binders (I saw them on-line) and they didn't have them in the store. I was really bummed. They looked it up and said they wouldn't be in the store until October. What's magical about October????

So nothing new here in the midwest - at least not until October.

    1. I hear you Patty!!! I normally buy a bunch of different planners each fall to have on hand when I change my mind throughout the year, because I change my mind so often. And I just like to try new planners! Many planners sell out even before the new year. I've been burned in the past when I held out on buying a planner, then when I decided I really wanted it after all it was already sold out! So I tend to panic-buy.

  2. I had spent a lot of money and time getting inserts set up to use in my personal filofax; planning to run a week on two pages for my main planning and keep one week at a time of DayTimer 2PPD to plan my individual days on a weekly basis.

But, I just keep plugging away with my FranklinCovey compact with 2PPD. As much as I find FC aesthetically deficient I find the system works so well that I'm a bit reluctant to change anything. Every single time I need to write something down I know exactly where to write it. Every time I need to find something I know exactly where to look. Everything fits (easily) in the 1.5 inch rings. The pages are large enough to write on and the whole system is small enough to be (reasonably) portable without a bag. So I just keep on plugging away with it.

I just wish I could get this functionality in a filofax binder. But they refuse to make binders with reasonable ring sizes...

I was thinking of buying a plannerisms planner for next year and just use my filofax for the day pages and reference info and use the plannerisms for scheduling out and tracking projects and goals, etc. But I think I need to maintain the flexibility of the looseleaf system. I really like being able to interleave the project plan onto the day I plan to execute it, or being able to insert the directions to the wedding, or whatever.

I've not been looking for planners; I don't know if new ones are in the shops yet.

    1. Josh, there is a LOT to be said for knowing where to write everything and knowing where to look to find everything. That is golden.

What about other brands of binders? Are there any other brands that make 1.5 inch rings? What about getting something custom-made? I don't know about that possibility, but surely someone exists in the world who does this? It might be cost-prohibitive though. Just thinking as I write. It would be so nice to have a large-ring alternative!

    2. Josh, I may be persuaded to sell my ruby FF Winchester with 5/4 rings... Contact me on Twitter if you are interested.

  3. There is a brand-new planner that I'm VERY excited about this year: WeekDate's Academic-Year planner with a revised format. I've reviewed WeekDate planners several times (you can click on WeekDate in the sidebar cloud to see my reviews) and I love the Only Write It Once concept. The Academic-year version doesn't have the tri-fold style of their usual planners. Instead it's a normal book style, and when you open it the pages don't go all the way down to the bottom of the cover, so you write your recurring weekly events below there and that way you don't have to re-write them over and over each week! The size and format are excellent for portability and writing space. I have one of these on its way to me, which I am extremely excited about because they are in limited quantity this year as a test product. You can see them here: http://www.weekdate.com/academic_planner.htm

  4. Well, I am three days away from starting the second 005 insert diary in my Midori. Each book covers 2 months, so if I decide to change format it's not a huge time investment and neither is it a big economic investment. It also bothered me that buying a whole year of paper and then changing my mind wasn't very "green".

Over the last two months I've tweaked my set up, and I'm using a combination set up. I like the Bullet Journal consecutive listing with boxes for To Do, circles for Events and dots for "interesting". I don't have to decide in advance how much space to allocate to each section which means I can use all the paper efficiently, and it's all evenly spaced rather than some bits getting bunched up (I have biggish writing).

I'd like to find somewhere to record the weather (geeky or what), perhaps on the monthly list page at the front of each month section.

And if it doesn't work then in two months time I can try a different set up, guilt free!

    1. lol, i record the weather! i just draw little pictures/icons next to or under the date on the page. if the weather is the same all day, then 1 pic but some days have up to 3 for am/afternoon/evening. yes geek here :)

    2. I write in the weather too, which is so interesting here where the weather is so variable. Now it's cool to look back at last year and when it first snowed, what the temps were, etc. I also write in when the first daffodils came up, leaves out on trees, and now as the leaves are turning I'm writing that in too. Over the years it will be cool to see the differences year to year. And, I'm planning to plant a vegetable garden next year so my daily weather records will help me know when the last frost ends and the first frost starts, wet/ dry months etc.

  6. I have your Plannerism Planner that used mosy of the year. I love it except for the size...it's just too small for me. I switched to the full size uncalendar, I also really like that except too big! I feel like Goldilocks. Also the paper in the uncalendar is a big disappointment. Any chance next year you might offer 2 sizes? Wish I could find an in between size with room for notes/lists..any ideas? Thanks :)

    1. Hi Jo Ann, the 2014 Plannerisms planners are finished printing and they are in just the same size (5 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches), but I'm hoping for 2015 we'll be able to have a larger size too.

One option for you is the Quo Vadis Trinote, I used it for a few years and it's great: spectacular paper and spaces on the week pages for lists. It is 7 by 9 3/8 inches, so it's that in-between size you're looking for. It doesn't have monthly grid calendars, but does have a year overview with months as columns. You can click on Trinote in the sidebar cloud for all my posts about it, and the QV product page is here: http://quovadisplanners.com/catalog/trinote

  7. Thanks for your input! I checked it out and also the Space 24 which has the monthly calendar too, which I like. Its a possibility. I still really like all the different spaces and boxes in the uncalendar. Wish it had better paper and was a little smaller. I'm excited to hear the Plannerism might come in 2 sizes in 2015!

  8. I'm not sure if this is appropriate, but I recovered my beat up filofax with duct tape! My mini rio was really dunged up, so I put black duct tape on it. Check out the first two pictures on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=filofax%20rescue
Wanted to share so if someone had a beloved Filo they wanted to continue using, they could try this.
***Note, I only paid $12.75 for my mini at a discontinued Filofax sale.***

    2. Thanks, Laurie! I figured a few folks might be able to get a lot more usage of an otherwise beat up planner.

  9. I am really struggling to work out what I actually need in a planner. One day I'll be leaning to a day-per-page that I can plan out my schedule for the day and still take notes, then I start thinking I really only need a weekly planner (and I love the look of the Plannerisms planner) and a separate notebook as a kind of journal/things I want to remember about the day that I can take at the end of the day and either put into my journal, or turn into an action item, depending on what it is.
That way I'd have my daily to-do list as a separate sheet slotted into my planner and only use the note book as a place to scribble if there was anything i wanted to remember. So it wouldn't need to be a huge book. Someone suggested post it notes that I could easily move to the place they needed to go to at the end of the day - memory trigger, task to go on to-do list, whatever. Then I wondered if I should carry my journal around with me - but i don't want to use that as a "scratch pad" for stuff I need to remember.
So I'm not sure what to do - there are so many ways and I guess I'll never know what will work until I try a few approaches :-)

    1. Yes don't be afraid to experiment and then change your system if it's not working for you! Also something to keep in mind is that something might work for awhile, but then when your circumstances change you might need something else. Experimentation is good! :)

    1. Quo Vadis makes recycled-paper academic-year planners that are very nice:

      http://quovadisplanners.com/covers/equology

And all of their planners, not only the recycled ones, are made in an eco-friendly way:

  11. Daytimer.com has options, for both ring bound and wirebound, if you sort for "recycled," and franklinplanner.com has options for both types if you sort for "eco friendly."

  12. Oh--and both Paperblanks and Graphic Image are made with archival paper made on acid-free sustainable forest paper. Paperblanks has an ecological impact statement on their website.
