Free For All Friday No. 24: How Much Does Your Planner Weigh?

I'm always trying to balance page size and functionality with the size and weight of my planners.

My system this year is my Plannerisms planner, which weighs about 325 g, and my large Moleskine notebook which weighs about 340 g. I normally don't mind carrying both together, unless I'm going to be doing a lot of walking and then it's a bit of a drag. But after years of trial and error, this seems to give me the largest page size (approx A5) in the most comprehensive system (monthly and weekly planning, goals and tracking, daily records, lists and notes) for the least weight.

Sometimes I think of trialing a personal size Filofax version of my Plannerisms layout, but my personal size Filofax with the pages in is more than 500 g. Considering I would still use my large Moleskine as my permanent archival record book, the nearly 850 g total weight would be more than I want to carry everywhere.

I also fantasize about having everything in one A5 size binder, but with all the pages in it weighs in at a hefty (and non-portable) 1040 g.

Have you ever weighed your planner? I'm curious to know how much planner weight people carry around.

And as always on Fridays, feel free to discuss anything planner-related!

  1. I just weighed my personal Holborn, 580g including 3 pens and a bunch of sticky notes in the card slots. That includes a wodge of lined paper, LMIv2.01 monthly inserts for Jan-Sept, weekly inserts to June and daily inserts to the end of March. Plus project pages and references pages. There's a few folded A4 papers in the pockets, but not many.

  2. ok my work an Identity A5 is 1kg and my blue paperchase A5 I use for personal use is 1.1kg.... As you have guessed I don't carry them together unless I'm out on audit.. But my home/personal didn't feel it would weigh more, I thought it would weigh less.. Each has a years worth of week on two pages and a years worth of month on two pages

  3. My planner/ notebooks combination weighs 723g including the cover and the four pens I carry with them. I miss the look of my filofax but I am loving this set up so much i wouldn't think of going back. Lighter, more compact and I haven't been faffing about with pages.

  4. There's a file on Philofaxy that has weights of a lot of different models:

  5. My pocket Filofax is 228g fully loaded. The just finished journal was 245g and the new one is 400g, but I love it enough to be willing to go heavier. Total carry weight 628g.

  7. my A5 flex with the kitchen sink inside (which just gets carried around my home office with this much of everything) weighs in at a hefty 838g today. i'll try to remember the weigh the "normal schlepping weight" soon, that leaves a few notebooks out.

    1. I worked on the weight a bit and brought it down to 620g... no wonder why my neck/back hurts?

  8. Just weighed my Hobonichi.
370g including the cover, a pen and a dozen cards - bank, library, cinema, driving licence etc.
That's a whole year of Page Per Day and Month to a view plus notes. Can you tell I'm a bit of a fan?

  9. My current portable setup is a Kate Spade personal-sized binder with home-printed MPP (1 year), WPP (current month), and DPV (this week). Plus a small selection of sticky notes, reference pages, task lists and blank paper. It weighed 486g the other day, although I can't remember if that was including my pen and highlighter or not. I've been leaving the iPad 2 at home to spare my shoulder and the handles on my bag, now that I'm back on paper (mostly). I'm still debating an A5 though, as I really miss a big weekly view. The mini printout just isn't cutting it.

I also am using a Quo Vadis Notor as a daily journal, but it stays home. If I need to note something in it when I am away, I use a sticky note and add it later. I've either stuck it directly in the Notor, or I rewrite it . I'm not talking washi and cute sticky notes - I'm talking plain square notes and a piece of Scotch tape.

  10. Not much! I use a Filofax slimline and it's not overstuffed but it's full. I don't know the exact weight but its not heavy=)

  11. I don't do grams. Mine weighs 1.2 pounds - it's a Franklin Covey Compact. It's not lightweight. The binder itself probably is a fair amount of the weight. When I've used my FC Classic, it's 1.6 pounds. Not as much difference as I thought. I guess I pack my compact pretty full.

  12. I carried an A5 Cuban Zip for 3 years while working in Afghanistan. I couldn't have got by with less than A5 due to the amount of complex programme management stuff I needed to carry regularly, and due to the amount of A4 inserts I was given and needed to keep for several days (or sometimes weeks). I weighed it after a few months and I was astounded to see it tipped the scales at 2.3 Kg. Although it was a beast, the leather on the Cuban Zip (Saddle Brown) took a great deal of punishment and scratches just seemed to buff out.

  13. I don't know. I tried weighing myself then weighing myself with the planner and subtracting, but the results were the same on my scale. So I am guessing it doesn't weigh that much - or the scale is awful. :)

    1. Giftie your bathroom scale probably isn't sensitive enough to register the difference. I use a kitchen scale that measures it down to the gram. :)

  14. 375g for my midori traveller with 3 standard grid notebooks in and the zipped plastic wallet. The std grid notebooks are a lot cheaper than the pre printed diary ones but heavier. I use one as a vertical month per 2 pages, one as a horizontal week per 2 page and the third as a general note book. I have a second mirdori traveller I bought second hand I'm thinking of cutting down to passport size if I can every find any waterproof note books in field notes size to make something a bit more suited to carrying around the English weather on a motorbike.

  17. My personal Holborn with a year of week to view, a year of monthly sheets, to do, random other things like a list of the maps we have, notepaper, addresses, money, cards, stamps, etc.. is 530g. I swapped into a Portland (exactly the same contents) and amazingly it weighed the same - I had thought the Portland was lighter as a binder but obviously not.
I use my filofax as wallet and planner combined.
