Free For All Friday No. 30: Your planner, clean and pristine or well-used = well-loved?

Some people like to keep their planners looking like new as long as they can. And I definitely agree that some planners/ binders look best when they are unblemished.

But there's a lot to be said for a well-used planner that's a bit tattered and marked. It looks like it's had a good life!

What about you? Do you prefer your planner to stay relatively pristine? Or does a well-loved planner show signs of use?

And as always on Fridays, feel free to discuss and/ or ask anything planner-related!

  1. I couldn't keep a binder - or anything - looking new for long. Even my laptop, kindle and phone look battered. Fortunately I gravitate to designs that weather well.

  2. My Plannerisms planner isn't yet tattered but I do like that it looks well-used. I look forward to photographing it against my new one at the end of the year... but do I go for the same colour or a different one?

  3. I don't know that I care so much. Function wins over form for me, most of the time. Although if I can buying a pretty color, I do.

The red Quo Vadis Visual cover I used for 5 years still looks untattered, maybe slightly dirtier at the spine. And all except one of the Filofaxes I've recently bought were used. Even the brand new A5 Ascot I bought came with a few marks, and maybe I've added some.

  4. I like the exterior to stay neat and clean, but the interior is marked up, down and sideways.

  5. My planner definitely looks used. There's a faint scratch across the front. I don't care as long as nothing's broken. I had one with a clasp on the front and the clasp broke. I can't handle that. Fortunately my handy husband rigged it for me so I was able to continue using it for quite a while. I do avoid certain types of binders, though, so they don't look "dirty" - like fabric or certain types of texture.

  6. I recently found a Filofax that I used for several years before I retired and I was amazed at how battered it was! Though marked and badly scuffed, it brought back many happy memories from my working life. It was like a walk back in time. My current Filofax is pristine and dare I say it...lacking any character whatsoever.

  7. I have tried Franklin and Filo, DayRunner and Deben (here in Australia), but of late my love has been a used three ring binder that I brought down-under last year. It is nothing special, and it is full of home-made pages (including some from PhiloFaxy's templates). Candidly, it scares me at times: talk about my life all in one place! It is battered and bruised and a hodgepodge of A4 vs letter. Nothing fancy but it is everything to me.

  8. My bound week-at-a-glance calendar is always coming apart by December, but the Franklin Covey binders are very durable.
