Due to popular demand, Deafmessanger now has a new larger diary for 2018! The Small A6 one is still there, and has been joined by the Big size that is slightly smaller than A5. I think they will be very popular!
My not very scientific measurements of the two are: Big: 7 3/8 inches tall and 5 1/4 inches wide; Small: 6 inches tall and 4 1/2 inches wide. Both sizes are very lightweight and easy to carry around.
Both sizes come with a variety of cover artwork. They sell out quickly every year so don't wait! You can see all the Small diaries here and the Big diaries here. As each cover style sells out they disappear from the website, so what you see is what is left.
The diaries are all handmade in Prague by artist Kucin. I absolutely love the style of his artwork. The art is stenciled and spray painted. In every book there are loads of added items that he has found like old maps or pages from ledger books, post cards and photos, and cutouts from magazines. These items are upcycled or recycled, and come from all over the world. Kucin finds them everywhere: flea markets, sales, and things that have been thrown away or given away. You never know what you will find in your book, and each book is unique.
The colored page edges are a nice contrast. Each diary comes with a pencil so you can get started right away and always keep your pencil with your diary. There is also a ribbon pagemarker, and an elastic strap to keep everything contained.
Inside the front cover there is a pocket made from cards, magazine clippings, or pictures. Each one is unique. This pocket is a great place to keep little slips of paper, reminder notes, receipts, cards, etc.
There are month overview pages with six months across a two page spread. This gives you a great overview of your year and lets you see important days, events, deadlines, holidays, travel, and the big picture of your year.
Below is a week spread. Each two-page spread has a full week Monday to Sunday with equal space for each day. Every week is different with a new picture or quote or something stuck in. This keeps your diary interesting all year. You never know what you will find when you turn the page! The weekly pages are perfect for planning ahead, writing memories or notes, and/ or keeping as a journal.
Here is a cool map that was stuck into the book, and a quote. I love all the surprises I find in the books!
New this year! There are stickers to label the lined and blank pages in the back of the book to customize them as you like. There are also stickers to mark special days in your diary pages.
Inside the back cover is the contact info for Deafmessanger.com, and more cool pictures.
Deafmessanger diaries and notebooks represent so much of what is meaningful and important to me: art, self expression, memory, history, and the importance of tangible things in this increasingly digital world. The books are engaging while being quiet, allowing you the headspace to think and express yourself on the pages. They give you the freedom to write your plans and memories, and a quiet space to reflect.
Deafmessanger notebooks and diaries make great gifts. They ship worldwide! You can contact them to ask about international shipping rates. You can convert the prices to your currency at XE.com or a similar conversion site.

Deaf Messanger 2016 planner
Huge enormous thanks to artist Kucin of Deaf Messanger (in Prague) for sending me this awesome 2016 Diary/ Planner!
This is the Boxers 2016 planner. It is one of dozens of cover designs for their 2016 planners. You can see them all here.
The Deaf Messanger planners are very lightweight and portable, A6/ pocket size, with an elastic closure, red ribbon placemarker and an elastic loop with a pencil included. They are made of recycled paper and are handmade with spray paint, stencils and screen printing.
I love the graphic-colored page edges!
If you've never seen one of their planners or notebooks, you are truly missing out. These are works of art, literally.
Throughout each diary there are sayings, quotes, pictures and more.
These are also completely functional planners, with month overview pages:
And space for every day of the year. Every page is different, so you'll never get bored.
As always with Deaf Messanger planners and notebooks, each one is completely unique. Kucin adds in things he finds at flea markets or on the street like newspaper and magazine clippings, maps and ledger book pages.
This book even has a strip of film. This film happens to be of a baby bear drinking out of a bottle!
Additional pages include these:
Plus lots of blank notes pages in the back of the book.
I haven't shown you nearly everything in this diary. There are surprises on every page!
I have a collection of Deaf Messanger diaries now! These are the 2014 and 2015 planners I reviewed previously .
Kucin also included a couple of stickers for me, with excellent life reminders:
My love of Deaf Messanger products is multi-layered:
I love them for the art itself. They have such a cool style, I feel infinitely cooler just owning one.
They are full of tangible things like clippings, maps, film bits, etc. We have so few of these types of tangible things anymore because so many people view these things electronically these days. These little bits of history are precious.
Those tangible bits are pieces of people's lives, past and present. These give me perspective on my own life, and make me feel like a part of the world.
I'm not the only one who loves Deaf Messanger's approach and style. Actor Noomi Rapace recently commissioned 35 notebooks to be made as gifts for people she worked with on the movie Child 44. You can see those notebooks here. You can see Deaf Messanger's custom books and more information here.
If you are thinking about getting a 2016 diary/ planner, don't wait. They go really fast. In fact, by the time I got around to reviewing last year's (in early December) they were already completely sold out!
You can see their entire 2016 diary/ planner selection here, and all their fantastic products in their shop at http://www.deafmessanger.com/shop/ . They ship worldwide! You can use XE.com or a similar currency converter to see the prices in your currency. (In the US you can buy some of the notebooks at LoveNotebooks.com, but they don't carry the planners.)
Many thanks again to Kucin for sending me this diary and stickers! I love it. To learn more about the artist himself, read about him and his artistic method here, and this interview here. Also be sure to check out his Facebook page too! They've just now put up on their Facebook page a very cool video about the whole notebook-making process, check it out!
Disclaimer: I received the planners shown as samples to review, but I am otherwise not affiliated with the company in any way and do not receive any commission or other funds.

Deaf Messanger 2014 diary and large notebook!
I love the street-art look of Deaf Messanger diaries and notebooks!
Deaf Messanger products are made by an artist called Kucin in Prague. Each item is unique because it incorporates found objects like post cards, pages from old books and letters, magazine pages and maps. The result is a fascinating and useful object of art.
This is the Kahlo 2014 diary from Deaf Messanger. I admire Frida Kahlo so when I saw this diary I had to get it! There are loads of cover images to choose from for the 2014 diaries, you can see them all here.
This diary is approximately A6 size and is absolutely featherweight at only 137 g so it can easily go everywhere with you in your pocket or bag.
It comes with a pencil in its loop so you are all set to use it immediately!
Inside the front cover is a pocket made out of paper scraps:
The first page is decorated with stencil art:
There is a year planner with six months per two-page spread:
Every week's page is different with stencil art and other items of interest:
Inside the back page is part of a dictionary from Russian to I assume Czech. If I could remember my Russian well enough I could learn some Czech!
I haven't shown everything here, there are plenty of fun surprises in this diary!
When I ordered my diary I asked Kucin if it would be ok to do a post about it with photos of the inside pages. I didn't want to give away any secrets! He said yes, and to thank me for my post and my review of the Square Journal I did a few years ago on LoveNotebooks.com he added a surprise gift for me: this awesome notebook!
This is the Big Notebook, which comes in a huge selection of cover images. The Big notebook is approximately A5 size, and weighs only 232 g so it's very portable.
Inside the front cover is a pocket made from a magazine page. Remember each book is unique so what's inside each one is different.
The first page has cool stencil art with the Deaf Messanger logo:
The recycled paper is unlined, and there is a ribbon placemarker:
There are lots of fun surprises in this notebook too:
I love old ledger pages like this:
The back page has the Deaf Messanger website (www.deafmessanger.com) and email address:
Even the backs of the books are cool. Here is the back of the notebook:
And here is the back of the pocket diary:
I love how these diaries and notebooks have bits of life already in them. It reduces that intimidation of writing into a fresh new book, because someone has already stuck bits in to get you started. I especially like the old letters and ledger books from years and years ago. Whoever wrote those was writing in their present, which is now our past. The diary and blank notebook represent our future, and when you write in it you are recording your present. Then you can read them later to look back on your past. Sorry to get all existential on you! These are just really cool books.
Huge thanks again to Kucin!
You can find the entire range of Deaf Messanger products including diaries and notebooks, and their new wall calendars and tote bags at www.deafmessanger.com!
