Free For All Friday No. 4: setting up my planner

This is the time of year when I set up my new planner for next year. By "set up" I mean write in all the dates and events I already know for next year, birthdays and anniversaries, school scheduled events, insurance renewals etc.

Also, I write in the day spaces all those things that I want that aren't already printed. Even in my Plannerisms planner there aren't as many things as I would like in there. The public holidays for the US, UK, Australia and Singapore are already printed on the days, but cultural holidays like Mother's Day are not because my publisher (and customers too) didn't want the day spaces to be too cluttered. So I write in those holidays for the US and the UK, to know what's happening here and back home. For example, Mother's Day is on a different day in the US than in the UK, and I don't want to forget to call my mom that day!!

I also write in when Daylight Savings Time and British Summer Time begin and end.  And, I write in phases of the moon just because I like to see them.

What do you do to set up your new planner for the upcoming year?

And as always on Fridays, please feel free to post a comment and discuss anything planner-related!

  1. I do the exact same things. I just started earlier.

  2. Yes! Same here. No one understands why I do this, but for me it is extremely calming because now I know I am set and that the important items will not be forgotten.

  3. I have loads to do, also because I am switching from a bound Planner Pad to a looseleaf:

    - yes, write in all appointments, birthdays and so on I already know
    - put in stickers I have had made of weekly recurring tasks
    - make section dividers (Planner Pad doesn't have them)
    - move notes from different paper notebooks and printed schedules into sections (this is the reason I am switching to looseleaf)
    - print new monthly blog planner pages I made myself
    - create Knowledge Pages like the Action Day notebook and Ideation Station pages like from Circa (or possibly order them)
    - arrange stickers, stamps, tabs and sticky notes in plastic inserts
    - possibly decorate some weekly pages with stickers and washi tape

Unfortunately, my 2014 Planner Pad hasn't arrived yet, so I have to wait before I can start all this.

    1. Marieke, I have the Seasons Planner Pad for this year. It might end up being to small, I will not know for sure until I am in the midst of entries. It is pretty though. I usually get the standard black and sticker the front of it. Where did you have your stickers made for your recurring tasks?

    2. Hi Carol, I have had the stickers made at a Dutch website, www.goedgemerkt.nl. It may be hard to order them (in Dutch) but they do fit my Planner Pad perfectly (see photos on my blog http://www.o-pen.nl/stickers-for-my-planner-pad-categories/?lang=en) They save from repeat writing and make my weekly pages more colorful.

    1. Absolutely. This is why I have two planners to set up in addition to the one I am using which goes till next July.

    2. I'm the opposite. I panic-buy any planner I think I might want at some point during the year because I've been burned in the past when I've waited to buy a planner I was interested in, and by the time I decided to buy it, it was sold out! Terrible! So now, when in doubt, I just buy it. Not very budget- or environmentally-friendly, but everybody has their thing and planners are mine.

    3. Absolutely. I haven't even thought about what I'm using next year since I can't figure out what to use NOW.

    4. Before finding this site I felt awful spending money on more than one planner a year...I had no idea there were other kindred spirits out there! :)

  5. I keep a list for Future Planning in the back of my calendar pages, so everything for next year is written there as it passes this year. For example, when my anniversary passes on May 31st, I add it to my future planning list in May.

During the week between Christmas and New Years, I do next year's planner. It's a grand tradition that I love, so no way would I do it early.

  6. I put birthdays and anniversaries. On the back page of the monthly pages I put things I need to do - like renew off-site backup, schedule a dr appointment, renew a magazine, etc. But on the calendar it's pretty much just birthdays and anniversaries.

  7. Who here listens to the Pen Addict Podcast? http://5by5.tv/penaddict

It's an enjoyable hour long show about once a week or so. Check it out.

    1. I do! I found their podcast when Mstraat recommended their Bullet Journal podcast and I've been addicted to their show ever since!

  8. Just this week I printed out the inserts I want to use in my ringbound planner for next year, so I could add the travel details we've got sorted for New Years... but I've only been in this size for a week or so, and the chances of me sticking with it are so slim that I've got inserts the next size up, waiting in the wings.

Sometimes choice is a bad thing, lol.

  9. I just got my pocket size Moleskine Star Wars weekly planner, and I'm feeling smug and happy. :-) I figure the Star Wars planners won't be around for too many more years, so I'm just going to use them as long as they are around.
