Poll: Monthly calendars, Sunday or Monday start?

Whether you prefer your monthly calendar's weeks to begin on Sunday or Monday has a lot to do with where you live.

In the US, monthly calendars' weeks usually start on Sunday. Many people in the US don't like monthly calendars that start on Mondays because they are used to the Sunday start ones and find Monday-starting weeks confusing. I grew up with all monthly calendars starting their weeks on Sunday.

Elsewhere in the world, monthly calendars' weeks usually start on Monday, which I prefer. It keeps the weekend together for easier planning, and I like that my weekly planner pages directly match up with the corresponding week on my monthly calendar.

Quo Vadis blog had a post on this not long ago, and even though most of their readers are in the US there were still mixed replies.

Which do you prefer, Sunday or Monday start? Please vote in the poll in the sidebar!

  1. I want it to start on Monday so the weekend is together. I do not understand why companies produce planners that have the weeks starting on Monday but the monthly pages start on Sunday. What's up with that?

    1. AGREE. I really hate this NON-sense arrangement. This is confusing and disorienting. WHO on earth starts their work week on SUNDAY???!!! Weekend should be bunched together.

    2. My work week goes Sunday-Saturday, actually, because I don't work a Monday-Friday 9-5 job.

    3. I start my work week on Sunday, Mayumi, as do all my colleagues.

  2. I always preferred the Monday start, but my work week is Sunday-Thursday, so I also find Sunday starts convenient. As long as all my calendars are consistent, I don't have a strong preference either way, but I agree, it is nice to see the weekend as a unit, as I tend to think of the two days as a pair and don't want them on opposite ends of the calendar view! I am US based but this is something we just do WRONG, like unit measurements and health care.

  3. I'm a Monday-start person; I like the weekend together too.

I've always thought of a week running from Monday to Sunday; no idea why, it just seems logical to me. I also change my online calendars for a Monday start.

  4. Yes, I'm also from the US but strongly prefer Monday-start calendars -- Sunday start is confusing (and wrong!).

By the way, I've noticed that a fair number of South Korean-produced calendars start the week with Sunday. Also, the bound planners may have Monday-start weekly planning but Sunday-start monthly calendars. Be wary.

  5. For me the week starts on Monday. Unfortunately in the US, planners often have the month grid as Sunday - Saturday but the week view Monday - Sunday. In the very same calendar!

I'm sure there's a very good reason. I just can't figure it out.

    Congratulations on your forthcoming move!

  6. The Sunday start works way better for me because I work in a church and so that is actually the first day of my work week. Friday afternoon and Saturday are my "weekend."

  8. My weekends are Sunday-Monday. This is why I tried to use a daily format for a while - but really need a week. So I just suffer split weekend syndrome.

  9. I work weekends, so having a calendar that splits my two main workdays in half can be frustrating. I prefer the monday start for that reason.

  10. I prefer Sunday to remain as the first day of the week. Sunday is a day of relaxation for me and the best day to start the week because I'm starting it off with a relaxing day for each week in the year.

For me, Saturdays is Errands Day, Sunday is Relaxation Day. It makes sense to me to have Errands Day the last day of the week. Not saying my errands ends just before midnight Saturday (I do have fun!)

  11. I work through the weekend so a Monday start is preferable.

  12. I was taught that Sunday is the 1st day of the week and would not want to change now. I would not want a calendar that had Monday as the 1st day. However, calendar companies should allow for people to have different preferences.

    1. I understand that US monthly calendars start with Sundays, but I never understood why (and I'm American!) The vast majority of people start their work week on Monday, with Saturday and Sunday as weekends. I think people just prefer whatever they are used to using.
